Yoga & Longevity: How Iyengar Yoga supports healthy ageing

Modern longevity research is increasingly in agreement: healthy ageing is not based on a single miracle cure, but on a solid foundation comprising five key pillars: diet, exercise, sleep, stress management and a sense of purpose in life.
What is fascinating is that the practice of Iyengar Yoga addresses several of these pillars simultaneously – and thus acts as a holistic tool for a long, healthy life.

Exercise is more than just fitness – it’s biochemistry
(Longevity Pillar 2)
In Iyengar Yoga, postures (asanas) are performed with precision and often held for extended periods. With the aid of props, a practice emerges that simultaneously strengthens and stretches the skeletal muscles – in a balanced and, above all, aligned and correct manner; the key word here is ‘alignment’.
This type of muscle work has profound effects: the latest research shows that, when activated in a targeted and moderate manner, muscles release messenger substances – so-called myokines. These have an effect throughout the entire body:
They affect organs and tissues
regulate inflammatory processes
support the immune system
The muscles are not just a locomotive system, but also an active metabolic organ – a kind of ‘body’s pharmacy’.
Take Virabhadrasana II (Second Warrior Pose), for example: here, virtually all muscle groups are working simultaneously – through extension, flexion and holding the pose. It is precisely this combination that appears to be particularly effective.

The health benefits of yoga
An increasing number of studies specifically examining yoga are reaching similar conclusions. Regular practice can:
extend life expectancy and improve health
regulate blood pressure
improve blood circulation
strengthen the cardiovascular system
protect the brain and promote neuroplastic processes
optimise lung function
strengthen the immune system
Improve blood lipid levels
Promote gut health and the microbiome
Regulate body weight
Build muscle and maintain bone density
Reduce stress
Boost cognitive performance
Lift your mood
In short:
Movement is life – and yoga is a particularly intelligent form of it.

Sleep quality & healthy living
(Longevity Pillar 3)
Yoga can significantly improve the quality of sleep – and in doing so, strengthen one of the key pillars of longevity. The link is less ‘mystical’ and can be explained quite clearly in neurobiological terms.
Sleep is not a passive state, but an active phase of regeneration. During this phase, cells and tissues are repaired, hormones (e.g. cortisol, melatonin) are regulated, and emotions and memories are processed.
Poor sleep, on the other hand, is associated with accelerated ageing, inflammation and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, depression and metabolic disorders.
Many people go to bed with an overactive stress response. Yoga helps to regulate this state by activating the parasympathetic nervous system (‘Rest & Digest’) and reducing the activity of the sympathetic nervous system (‘Fight or Flight’). This also normalises the heart rate and breathing rate.
This is essentially the physiological prerequisite for being able to fall asleep in the first place.
Furthermore, a regular yoga practice can lower elevated cortisol levels, one of the most common causes of poor sleep. This makes it easier both to fall asleep and to stay asleep.

Stress management: A key to healthy ageing
(Longevity Pillar 4)
Most people who take up yoga today are newcomers to a class, seeking a balance to their stressful daily (working) lives. Indeed, the findings of relevant studies are clear: chronic stress is considered one of the main factors accelerating the ageing process, and in the long run, too much stress can lead to serious illness at an early age.
Iyengar Yoga is so effective against stress because it regulates the body, nervous system and mind simultaneously – and does so in an unusually precise and lasting way.
Through precise alignment, holding the poses for longer and the use of props, a sense of stability and security is created. Breathing becomes calmer, the mind more focused, and the body learns to remain relaxed even under pressure. This not only reduces stress in the short term – it also develops the long-term ability to cope with stress more calmly.
Headstands and shoulder stands – whether practised actively or for relaxation, and supported by props – are, according to BKS Iyengar, true fountains of youth for body and mind.

Meaningfulness, mindfulness
(Longevity Pillar 5)
The ‘Meaning’ pillar of longevity describes the realisation that one’s own life has a direction and purpose. Those who experience meaning feel a sense of inner connection – with themselves, with others, or with something greater. This experience has a stabilising effect, reduces stress, and is closely linked to better mental and physical health.
Iyengar Yoga is more than just physical movement. It encompasses breathwork, pranayama, concentration and meditation based on the yamas and niyamas – the rules and precepts for a good, mindful way of life. BKS Iyengar’s approach describes a path of yoga practice from the outside in: Through precise work with the body – posture, alignment and structure – access is gradually created to deeper layers, via the breath, through to the nervous system and ultimately the mind. This practice promotes mental clarity and strengthens the sense of purpose and connectedness. Those who are mindful of themselves can also treat others with sensitivity and empathy.
